My Updated Skincare Routine (With Actives)

OK, no more safety talk. I hope that if you choose to experiment in skincare, you’ll do your own research and find what seems realistic for your skin and lifestyle. I’ve found that there’s a lot of experimentation involved, sometimes at the expense of your wallet.

Here’s an overview of my routine now.

MONDAY/WEDNESDAY/FRIDAY

Morning:

  • Rinse with water and pat dry
  • Vitamin C serum
  • (Optional) Hydrating serum
  • Moisturizer
  • SPF

Night:

  • Oil cleanser and/or makeup wipe
  • Mild face cleanser
  • Retinol – wait 30-40 minutes
  • Hydrating serum
  • Moisturizer
  • Eye cream
  • (Optional) Spot treatment

TUESDAY/THURSDAY

Morning:

  • Rinse with water and pat dry
  • BHA – at least wait for it to dry, but aim for a 15-25 minute wait
  • Hydrating serum
  • Moisturizer
  • SPF

Night:

  • Oil cleanser and/or makeup wipe
  • Mild face cleanser
  • AHA – at least wait for it to dry, but aim for a 15-25 minute wait
  • Hydrating serum
  • Moisturizer
  • Eye cream
  • (Optional) Spot treatment

SATURDAY/SUNDAY

Morning:

  • Rinse with water and pat dry
  • (Optional) Hydrating serum
  • Moisturizer
  • SPF (if I’m going out during the day)

Night:

  • Oil cleanser if I wore makeup or SPF
  • Mild face cleanser, with Clarisonic if I need manual exfoliation
  • Hydrating serum or face mask
  • Moisturizer
  • Eye cream
  • (Optional) Spot treatment

OTHER occasional PRODUCTS

  • Spot treatment – benzoyl peroxide 2% or Mario Badescu Drying Lotion
  • Face masks – moisturizing masks, clay mask, etc. depending on skin needs
  • Sheet masks – extra boost here and there
  • Hydrocolloid bandages – these are little stickers that cover your pimples and help draw out the gunk. They definitely make my pimples flatter and less red.
  • Clarisonic – yep, my trusty Clarisonic is still useful once in a while even though I use chemical exfoliation instead of manual exfoliation. I opted for a couple softer brush heads and use it about once or twice a week for a deeper clean with my cleanser.

I’m still working on finding the right routine for me, but so far I’ve been so impressed with how much my skincare can do to improve my skin. I feel totally comfortable going out without foundation now, and my makeup looks and feels better on my skin.

MY PRODUCTS AND CRUELTY-FREE alternatives

I started paying attention to skincare before I decided to go cruelty-free, so some of these products aren’t cruelty-free. I’m already starting to look up replacements for when this current set of products runs out, so I thought I’d show you some alternatives to the non-cruelty-free products in my collection. I haven’t used these yet, so I can’t say if they’re as effective as what I’m using now, but it’s a start!

CLEANSERS

SPF

  • La Roche-Posay Broad Spectrum SPF 60 – Not cruelty-free

ACTIVES AND SERUMS

  • Dr. Dennis Gross Hydra-Pure Vitamin C Brightening Serum – (also vegan)
  • Stridex Maximum Strength Pads (BHA) – It’s sometimes listed as cruelty-free, but I’m not sure
  • Nip + Fab Glycolic Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing Pads (AHA) (also vegan)
  • RoC Deep Wrinkle Serum (Retinol) – Not cruelty-free
  • First Aid Beauty Hydrating Serum
  • Hada Labo Hyaluronic Acid Lotion – I’m not sure whether they’re cruelty-free but they likely aren’t. I haven’t found a cruelty-free version of this product that has the same thinner consistency that this has.

LOTIONS AND CREAMS

  • Vanicream Lite Lotion Pump (also vegan)
    • I also have used and love the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Moisturizer and Ultra Repair Cream (also vegan)
  • Origins Eye Doctor Eye Cream (vegan but not cruelty-free because they sell in China, where animal testing is required)

SPOT TREATMENTS

  • Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment – Not cruelty-free
  • Mario Badescu Drying Lotion (also vegan)
