Best in Beauty: 2013 Favorites

Hi everyone!

I know it’s a teeny bit late for this post, but I just got back to school where I could really take a look at my collection and pick out my favorites! I only started blogging in May, but looking over my old posts has helped me figure some of these out tremendously!

Budget: Covergirl Outlast 3-in-1 Foundation

2014-01-13 14.54.41

I reached for this foundation the most this year for days I needed a long-lasting formula I could trust and a non-shiny finish. This is an amazing foundation!

High end: ????

I don’t have any high-end foundation favorites… yet 😉

Budget: Covergirl + Olay Concealer Balm Stick

This little stick has done pretty well for me this year. I really didn’t like it when I first got it, but I’ve grown to love it over the past few months. Maybe it needed some wearing in or something. Either way, this isn’t a HG-status concealer, but it works decently over problem spots and over my dark circles, and I’ve barely put a dent in it!

High end: Benefit Erase Paste

This is a great brightening concealer. I usually mix it with other concealers because it can look a little shiny, but it really camouflages dark circles and brightens up my often tired skin.

Budget: Maybelline Dream Matte Powder

2014-01-13 14.55.01

This was my go-to powder for most of the year for setting my foundation and concealer. It makes any foundation look completely matte and gives the skin a perfectly smooth finish. I really love the packaging, too; t’s perfect for throwing in your purse for afternoon touch-ups. I kept the bottom compartment to use the sponge on the go, but it’s not difficult to remove it if you don’t need the sponge and want an even thinner compact.

High-end: Makeup Forever Microfinish Powder

2014-01-13 14.55.15

I got this little sample in a Sephora bag, and I used this to set my undereye concealer a lot this year. It’s a white/translucent powder that doesn’t seem to set a whitecast, and looks completely invisible on the skin. Plus, the powder is so finely milled that the teeny jar has lasted me all year (and then some)!

Budget: Milani blushes, Wet ‘n Wild highlight

2013-08-31 22.33.06

2013-09-08 21.35.45

I discovered Milani’s blushes over the summer, and I can’t believe I still only have two. Luminoso is a blogger favorite, and for good reason (although it took me a little time to fall in love with it too). The Coming Up Roses line was limited edition and ran out like crazy, but I was able to snag my favorite subtle blush, “Romantic Rose.”

2014-01-13 14.55.37

Wet ‘n Wild’s Color Icon Bronzer in “Reserve Your Cabana” is a great bargain highlight powder. It’s not sparkly, it goes on smoothly, and there’s a ton in the compact. It’s my absolute favorite every-day highlighter.

High end: Tarte Amazonian Clay blushes, theBalm “Down Boy,” MAC bronzer

2014-01-13 14.55.59

2013-11-08 23.17.48

It’s no surprise that my Tarte Amazonian Clay Blushes made it on my favorites list this year. I got Flush in a holiday set in 2012 and have been using it all year, and as you are all aware, I got their holiday blush palette a couple months ago and have been using it almost exclusively ever since. These blushes are so beautiful and last all day.

2013-07-16 07.50.51

theBalm’s “Down Boy” was a huge favorite of mine this year. I don’t normally go for cool pinks, but this one isn’t so blue-based that it looks strange or unnatural. It’s one of those classic colors that seems seasonless.

2013-12-02 23.03.43

I tried my first MAC product this summer, their Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder in “Nude on Board” (from their Temperature Rising collection). It’s a really subtle brown that you can build up for a more dramatic look, which I really like. It’s the perfect medium brown for contouring!

Budget: Wet ‘n Wild eyeshadow palettes, Maybelline Color Tattoos

2014-02-02 23.32.14

I discovered Wet ‘n Wild eyeshadows this past summer, and I’m never turning back! I especially love their palette “Comfort Zone,” which has lots of unique neutrals. These eyeshadows are very pigmented and buttery smooth!

2013-05-24 22.13.35
Seashore Frosts, Waves of White, Shady Shores, and Icy Mint

It’s no surprise that I love Maybelline’s Color Tattoos, considering my first post ever is about one from their spring line earlier this year. They’re the perfect cream shadows: pigmented and smooth. My favorites are Tough as Taupe, Bad to the Bronze, and Seashore Frosts (LE).

High end: Urban Decay Naked Palette

2013-07-16 07.51.45

No surprise here, either. I’ve had my Naked palette a little over a year now, and while it took some time for me to fall madly in love with it, it became one of my favorites. I love every single one of these shadows, and the best part is, I’ve got years of use left ahead of me.

Budget: NYX Super Skinny Marker

2013-08-31 22.35.34

This liner is perfect for those days I don’t want to deal with my cream liners but still want that same kind of look. I’ve never been great with typical liquid liners, so having a pen form is great for me. This one lasts all day, and is even a little hard to clean off without an oil-based makeup remover.

High end: Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in Caviar Ink, Anastasia Brow Wiz in Soft Brown

2014-01-13 14.58.18

This is my HG cream liner. My pot is long dead, but I refuse to give it up! I love this shade because it’s not as harsh as black, but it’s such a dark brown that it has the same effect, it just looks a little more suitable for my skin tone/hair color/eye color.

Anastasia Brow Wiz

I love my Anastasia Brow Wiz! It’s the only brow pencil I’ve found that matches my brow color perfectly. It gives a really precise line but it doesn’t look harsh or fake. It’s perfect for outlining and/or filling the brows in.

Budget: Maybelline Mega Plush Mascara, Covergirl Clump Crusher Mascara

2014-01-13 14.56.33

The Mega Plush was my favorite mascara during the first part of the year. The flexible brush takes some getting used to, but overall I think it’s a great mascara.

2014-01-13 14.56.22

I tried out the Clump Crusher near the end of the year and fell in love with it, too. It really doesn’t clump, and it looks great for day-to-day looks.

High end: Benefit They’re Real Mascara

2014-01-13 14.56.50

This is my favorite mascara ever. It took quite a while to get the hang of the brush because it’s sharp and strangely shaped, but now I can’t go without it in my collection.

Budget: Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle, Revlon Balm Stain in Romantic, Maybelline Vivids Lipsticks

Pink Truffle is my HG “my lips but better” shade. It’s so flattering with every look and gives my lips a nice even tone. I’ll be repurchasing this for years!

2014-01-13 14.57.02

I have quite a few Revlon balm stains, but I reached for Romantic the most this year (you can tell by the worn-down label!). I love that it can go on subtle or bright. I mostly used it underneath other red lipsticks to make any red lip long lasting.

2014-01-13 14.57.44

The Maybelline’s Vivids Lipstick line is extremely pigmented and long-lasting. These are a must-have for those who love a bright lip.

High end: YSL Lipsticks

I fell in love with YSL lipsticks this year. I have two from the Rouge Volupte Shine line, and someday I’ll try out the original line. The colors are so beautiful and long-lasting, and these feel so light on the lips I almost forget I’m wearing anything at all.

Budget: Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Face Lotion, Vaseline Cocoa Butter Lotion

Neutrogena Sensitive Skin

This lotion is perfect: not greasy, fast-absorbing, and makes my skin feel really moisturized after using it. It’s perfect underneath my makeup!

I used this body lotion a lot over the summer and found that it absorbs really well into the skin. It also smells so good!

High end: Clarisonic Mia

I’ve had my Clarisonic for about a year, and it’s the best thing I’ve done for my skin. My skin is still nowhere near perfect, but this has helped exfoliate my skin and get rid of breakouts sooner. I got my whole family hooked on these!

Budget: Real Techniques Brushes, the Wet Brush

2013-08-01 21.46.57

I love my two Real Techniques brushes, and I’m planning on getting more soon. I especially love the Expert Face Brush, a dense kabuki-style brush for foundations. It would probably also make a great contour brush.

2013-09-16 23.20.36

The Wet Brush has been a godsend for my hair. My hair tangles so easily, but this brush goes right through tangles without breaking any strands. I wrote a full review of this brush, so check it out if you’re interested.

High end: Sigma Brush Cleaning Glove, Sigma Mrs. Bunny Brush Set

This brush cleaning glove saved my skin from a lot of gross bacteria. It makes cleaning brushes so much more fun and quick, and it deep cleans much better.

2014-01-13 13.40.33

These are my favorite makeup brushes. They’re soft, cruelty-free, and very durable. I know these are pricey, but they’re a really good investment if you’re looking for brushes you won’t have to replace right away. I love that the set comes with the case as well; it’s great for travel and on my desk!

Whew! That’s it for my 2013 favorites. Thanks for reading 🙂

  • I definitely see a bunch of my own favorites in here. Great picks! I think I may have to check out some sigma brushes and the cover girl 3 in 1 foundation. I’m a bit of a foundation junkie, but I haven’t yet tried that one!

    • Oooh you’ll love the CG foundation! I expect to see a review up on your blog shortly 🙂

I really do love my Sigma brushes. I got the for xmas last year and they still look and feel brand new. They have a bunch of different sets depending on the types of brushes you need, so it’s worth checking out and saving up for, in my opinion.

    • Thanks! I had a feeling that would be my fate and decided to bite the bullet during the VIB 20% off sale. Only way I could justify it but now I couldn’t be happier with it.
