Boots Cleansing Water

It’s been a while since I’ve done a straight-up product review! I got the Boots Cleansing Water a little while ago because I’ve found that makeup remover wipes never seem to get my eye makeup off (and I’ve tried a bunch — Neutrogena original and hydrating, Simple, Ponds…). I was interested in trying a cleansing water instead to see if it would work better, and because I find the wipes to be really wasteful and I have to repurchase them often. I’ve heard amazing things about the Bioderma and Caudalie cleansing waters, but I wanted to find something a bit more wallet-friendly.

The product is a clear water-like substance with a “clean” scent. It has quite a few ingredients, one of them being alcohol, so I don’t recommend this for sensitive skin (like mine). The scent is also very strong and might further irritate sensitive skin. On the whole, though, my skin didn’t react too badly to this until I tried using it with my fingers. My skin started burning and I had to rinse it off, probably because it had much more time to really sink into my skin that way. I only use it with cotton rounds now and swipe it quickly across my face.

I started off using just this to remove my makeup so I could see how effective it is, and it seemed to do the job. My cotton round would be completely covered in makeup and my Clarisonic wasn’t picking up too much afterwards. But, the more I used it, the more I noticed how much makeup really was left behind, especially mascara and eyeliner. I especially noticed this when I was trying to get some eyeshadow and lipstick swatches off my arm recently:

In the end, this doesn’t seem to be any more effective than makeup removing wipes. I’ve been using it to wipe cold cream off my face after rubbing it in to remove the makeup, but at this point I’m really trying to just empty the bottle. Needless to say, I don’t think I’ll be repurchasing this. But if you don’t have sensitive skin and don’t mind removing difficult eye makeup separately, it might be worth a try. You can get it at Target or online at places like

I think I’ll try one of the high-end versions sometime in the future to see if they really are as great as everyone says. I also heard that L’Oreal came out with one that’s good. What do you guys think?
