My mom and I did a little shopping, so I thought I’d share what I got, along with my first impressions of each item. We went to Nordstrom, Sephora, and Rite Aid.
MAC Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder – Nude on Board
I was looking for a good bronzer because I didn’t bring one home with me for the summer. I actually haven’t gotten anything from MAC before, which is kind of ridiculous, so it seemed about time.
The compact is really beautiful—it’s smooth and shines a reddish brown in the light. It also has a good sized mirror inside, which is always a plus. The bronzer goes on light for my skin tone, but it can be built up darker. I don’t know if I can say it fulfills its promise of lasting 12 hours, but it does seem to last most of the day.
NARS Larger than Life Lengthening Mascara
Nordstrom was having a “buy two get one free” deal on mascaras, so my mom got two for herself and let me choose the third. I’ve always been curious about anything NARS that isn’t eyeshadow or blush, so I decided to try it.
I don’t really find this mascara to be very lengthening, even though that’s what it claims to do. It just seems kind of meh. I’ll have to keep using it to see if there are any tricks to applying it, but for now this doesn’t seem like something I will repurchase.
My mom got the free gift with purchase and gave me a few things she won’t use: the Quickliner for Eyes Intense in 03 Intense Chocolate, and samples of their High Impact Mascara and eye makeup remover. I’ve used the mascara and makeup remover before, so I’m happy to have more of those, but I hadn’t tried the eyeliner before. It’s difficult to navigate on the top eyelid, but it can be smudged a bit to smooth it out. It works really well on the waterline and bottom lid, and seems to last a few hours without touching up.
YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in #17 Rose in Tension
I caved already and got another YSL lipstick when I stopped by Sephora. I wanted to get a more wearable color because I love my first one, but it’s difficult to wear such a bright color regularly.
This lipstick is a great “your lips but better” color for me. My lips are pretty pigmented, so light, nude colors never seem to look right. This shade is about the same color as my lips, but a little more pink. I’ll have to post a picture on Instagram shortly!
Philosophy Purity Facial Cleanser
I’ve been wanting to try this for a very long time, so I finally picked up the travel size on my way out of Sephora. I’ve heard that it removes makeup well and is a great match with the Clarisonic, and after one use, I can confidently say that both are true. I always remove my makeup before washing my face, but there was still some eye makeup left behind that this cleanser loosened up, and it worked really well with my Clarisonic. The smell is also really nice and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. Hopefully I’ll keep loving this enough to repurchase it when it runs out.
Caress Daily Silk Body Wash – White Peach and Silky Orange Blossom
I needed a new body wash, and I thought this one smelled nice. For less than $4, it seems like a good buy. It’s very thick, so I’m pretty sure this bottle will last me a few months, which is great because my skin didn’t feel sticky or dry after I used it like some cheap soaps can do. In short, if you’re looking for something cheap that works, this might be worth looking at.
Vaseline Total Moisture Cocoa Radiant Lotion
I’ve heard a lot of things about this body lotion, so I thought I’d give it a try. It smells really good yet isn’t overwhelming on the skin. It doesn’t spread as easily as I’d like, but it seemed to make my skin a lot softer right away. I think I’ll really love this once I get used to the texture.
CoverGirl + Olay Concealer Balm – Fair/Light
I’m really finnicky with under-eye concealers, so I’m always looking to try something new. My first impression of this product isn’t great, though. It didn’t blend well and instead ended up just thinning out so that I kept having to apply more. It also made my skin look really dry. I’ll try it again with eye cream underneath and mix it with other concealers to see if I can make it work better for me, but this doesn’t seem like something I’ll be racing out to repurchase later on.
CoverGirl Lipstick – 235 Fervor
Rite Aid was having a BOGO 50% sale, so I decided to get a lipstick along with the concealer. It feels really creamy and moisturizing on the lips and seems to last a long time, but it transfers easily, so it needs to be reapplied after eating and drinking like most lipsticks. It also made my lips feel pretty dry when it eventually wore off, but that’s also typical. For the most part, I really loved the color and texture of this lipstick.
The color is actually very similar to the YSL lipstick I picked up, just more concentrated:
YSL Rose in Tension and CoverGirl Fervor
Hits – MAC bronzer, Clinique freebies, YSL lipstick, Purity facial cleanser, Caress body wash, CG lipstick
Misses – NARS mascara, CG + Olay concealer balm
Pending – Vaseline body lotion
Looks like a successful haul! Let me know if you’ve tried any of these, or if you have any tips for making good use of my “misses.”
