4 Steps to Instantly Elevate Your Blog Photos

4 Steps to Instantly Elevate Your Blog Photos

Tutorials and Tips
One of the key things that sets new bloggers apart from the hundreds of similar sites out in the blogosphere is clean, high-quality photos. Yet, a top piece of advice that’s often given to new bloggers is: “Don’t invest in expensive equipment until you’re in the swing of things.” Conflicting advice like this is always frustrating, especially when you’re starting out and every decision feels like a make-or-break moment for the future of your blog. Here’s the thing. You do need high-quality photos when your blog requires visuals. And it is smart to be savvy with your money until you know that a) your blog proves its worth with decent traffic and maybe a little income, and b) you actually enjoy blogging and have enough to say about the subject…

Pare Down: October Update

Lifestyle, Organization
If you haven’t been following along, my goal for 2017 is to pare down my space, time, and mind. This means that I’m letting go of what’s cluttering my life to make room for what makes me happy. I make a post at the end of each month to reflect on how I’ve stepped toward and away from that goal. If you’d like to read more about this goal and read past monthly posts, start here. The weather is finally cooling down here in San Francisco, and I’m ready to dive into all things Fall! I’m hoping to do some fun vegan recipes on my non-beauty channel in the next few weeks, and maybe a tutorial or seasonal favorites video on my beauty channel. I don’t want to promise too…

My New Skincare Addiction

Musings, Skin, Tutorials and Tips
I have a confession to make. I fell into an internet rabbit hole. I enjoy finding random blogs and scrolling through Tumblr and Reddit. Somehow, I found the subreddit Skincare Addiction, and let me tell you, it is certainly an addiction. It started innocently: I started reading the information in the sidebar. A month ago, I considered myself to be mildly interested and educated in the world of skincare. Ha. The more I read, the more I realized I knew nothing. Skincare is truly a science, and companies hide it behind words like "brightening," "deep-cleansing," and "renewing." It turns out these words often mean much more than they seem. Chemical exfoliation is a huge topic in the subreddit, and I'd somehow never looked into it despite having used Stridex and…

Pare Down: May Update

Lifestyle, Organization
This month was rough for me, and my paring down goals fell behind a bunch of other priorities. But, near the end of the month I was able to get a bunch of stuff done! After posting my empties and purge videos, I was able to toss that trash and start a new bag for empties and purge makeup. Surprisingly, I already have quite a few items in it even though I just went through and got rid of so many products! So, here are the highlights: I reorganized my paper I mentioned last month that my paper organization had already been torn apart (thanks, taxes). I took everything out again and reorganized. I improved my clothing organization Everyone has that pile of clothes that they wore once or twice…

Painting My Dog’s Nails (and a Chihuahua Birthday Party)

Painting My Dog’s Nails (and a Chihuahua Birthday Party)

Musings, Tags, Videos
I've been having a blast with my dog Maya lately. She's so sweet and mellow, and she's got a funny little personality. I wanted to give her a beautiful manicure, even though she's a bit of a nervous dog and doesn't like people touching her feet. But I'd say it was a (minor) success! Now up on my beauty channel... https://youtu.be/0kbAqGFZI6I I feel like this should go without saying, but in case any of you are worried about her, we did not harm Maya in making this video. She was a shelter dog and is naturally nervous. Pulling her foot away and trembling are totally normal for her when there's something new going on (and pretty normal for chihuahuas in general, tbh). We agreed before we filmed that if at any…

First Impression + Review: Juvia’s Place Nubian I and II Palettes

First Impression + Review: Juvia’s Place Nubian I and II Palettes

Beauty steals, Eyes, First impressions, Palettes and sets, Product reviews, Videos
I was SO excited to try these palettes. Juvia's Place is an indy makeup brand and they've had a ton of success from their Nubian palettes. You may have seen some hype surrounding their newest release, the Saharan palette. I only heard about it after I made my purchase, though, so I only have the first and second palettes. This brand is cruelty-free, and most of their products are vegan (these two palettes are). Their brushes are cruelty-free, so next time I need brushes I might check them out! Their palettes and colors are inspired by the people and culture of different places in Africa. I came across the Nubian I palette on Pinterest, and then realized I'd seen it on Jaclyn Hill's channel. I also got the Nubian II palette…

Pare Down: February Update

Lifestyle, Organization
If you read my blog regularly, you know that this year I want to pare down, and my first month was a big success. I like doing monthly updates to help keep me accountable, and to help any of you who might be trying to declutter your lives too. In the last post, I ended with some goals to start tackling in February: Declutter the kitchen Declutter books, papers, and other random stuff Finish my makeup purge – I’ve got two boxes of makeup that’s either expired or I don’t wear, so I want to figure out what kind of blog post or video I want to do with it, and get rid of it! Keep cutting back on TV and YouTube time Schedule filming and blog drafting time like I…

Pare Down: January Update

Lifestyle, Organization
Wow, January has really flown by. It's been a whirlwind of coming home after the holidays, hitting the ground running back at work, and trying to put my new year's plans into action day by day. I wanted to do a quick check-in with how my first month of paring down has gone. You might remember that my focus for 2017 is to pare down on what I don't love or need to make room for the things that really matter. So... how did my month go? I did a huge declutter for my closet I regularly take everything out of my closet and dresser, sort through my clothes, and put everything back. I do this every 3 months or so, and I usually get rid of 2-5 items. This time,…

Marc Jacobs Le Marc Liquid Lip Creme and Lipliner

Marc Jacobs Le Marc Liquid Lip Creme and Lipliner

Lips, Product reviews
Hello, lovelies! Marc Jacobs came out with a liquid lipstick (a bit late to the game, but hey, it's exciting), and I was so excited to try it. If you've been reading this blog for a while, you know how much I love lipsticks, especially liquid lipsticks. You can imagine my thrill when I received an email from Influenster saying I was getting this voxbox. I've talked about Influenster before and I've gotten a number of voxboxes through them, but this was probably the box I was most excited for. If you want to sign up for Influenster, you can use my referral link or just go to their website. I don't get paid or anything, just more "impact score points" for the first 20 referrals, which increases my chances of…

Swatches: Kat Von D Lipstick Set

Swatches: Kat Von D Lipstick Set

Beauty steals, Lips, Product reviews, Videos
Hi! I was so excited to grab the Everlasting mini liquid lipstick set by Kat Von D during the Sephora VIB Rouge sale in November. This set contains 8 mini liquid lipsticks. I already had mini versions of Lolita and Lolita II as well as a full size of Ayesha, and I've fallen in love with the formula. These liquid lipsticks hold up through a whole day, and they don't change color over time. I find that while these don't dry out my lips (as long as I stay reasonably hydrated), they don't feel moisturizing either. To help make sure your lips don't dry out, I suggest putting on a lip balm for a few minutes and wiping it off just before you apply the lipstick. I love when brands let you try a range…

Maybelline Super Stay 24hr Color

Lips, Product reviews, Videos
Didya know that drugstore brands are coming out with liquid lipsticks like crazy now? It seems like everyone's looking for a matte, long-lasting lip. I've used a few high-end versions, and now I'm finally sharing a drugstore one with you! I was sent the Maybelline Super Stay 24hr Color by Influenster. I've talked about them in many posts, but you can find the first one here. But of course, while I was sent these lipsticks for review for free, the opinions I'm sharing in this post are all my own. I was sent the shades Constant Toast and Keep Up the Flame. Constant Toast is a frosty pink, and KUTF is a bright red. These lipsticks are double-ended, with the color on one side and a balm on the other. The…
