Fall Lipsticks

Hi!

As the weather cools down, it seems like everyone’s pulling out their “fall lipsticks,” but what kinds of shades count as in season, and what if the typical fall shades don’t seem to suit you? Well it turns out “fall lipsticks” can cover a lot of ground when it comes to shade selection, so I’ve chosen what I think are some basic color categories that will look great this season.

Deep berry

I feel like this color is what comes to mind first for a lot of girls when they think “fall lipstick.” This kind of shade can flatter many different skin tones and look great during the cold weather months. My favorite deep berry is MAC’s Rebel, but I’ll go for the Maybelline Color Whisper in Berry Ready if I want something lighter or easier to sheer out. If you’re a little nervous about trying this trend, I definitely recommend Berry Ready! It’s lightweight but can be built up quite a bit.

Plum

A plum is good to have if you’re looking for something more dramatic or “vampy,” which is trending right now. I love Wet ‘n Wild’s Megalast Lipstick in Ravin’ Raisin for this, since it’s so pigmented and lasts all day. What’s great about this lipstick, too, is that you can dab it on lightly for a more subtle plum-toned stain, so you can try out the trend without committing to a full-on vampy lip.

Deep red

I love wearing a deep red with a simple eye look during the fall. My absolute favorite deep red lipstick is Clinique Β Long Last Lipstick in Vintage Wine, or Revlon’s Lip Butter in Red Velvet if I want less of a pop. Both shades are beautiful, even with fair skin, in my opinion.

Bright red-orange

A bright red-orange can look great in the beginning of fall when it’s still a little sunny, and everyone has pumpkins on their minds. I love the Wet ‘n Wild Megalast Lipstick in Purty Persimmon for this kind of look. It goes on matte and leaves a slight stain, but if you want a little shine you can just add a lip gloss or shiny balm on top.

Dark neutral

I love a dark neutral for day-to-day wear in the fall. You really have a lot of freedom as to what kind of neutral you can choose for this category. I have a red-toned neutral I love (Covergirl’s Fervor) and a purple-toned one as well (Clinique’s A Different Grape), so I can go warm or cool depending on what I’m wearing.

Long-lasting light neutral

I think a long-lasting neutral is a must-have when the weather outside is acting a little temperamental. I tend to go for a pinkish tone for these because it can truly go with anything. I also tend to go for a balm stain formula, which gives long-lasting color but isn’t drying (at least for a few hours!). My favorites are the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey and the Jordana Twist and Shine Moisturizing Balm Stain in Honey Love. I know the names are similar, but these are actually quite different shades on the lips, and I highly recommend trying them out!

Those are all the categories I can think of! Let me know in the comments if you think I missed something, or if you’d like me to expand on one of the categories (like a Deep Berry Lips post, for example) along with some lip swatches.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Thank you for this informative post! I love all the color categories listed as you helped me see how many Fall lipsticks there are =) I love these all, but that MAC Rebel looks simply so seductive!

    1. Thanks so much! I’m glad you got something out of it. MAC Rebel really is a beautiful color. I’ve heard that the Wet ‘n Wild Megalast Lipstick in Sugar Plum Fairy is a great dupe if you’re looking to try out the shade before committing to a high-end purchase πŸ™‚
