Foundation Samples Mini-Reviews

Hi all,

I’ve gotten a few foundation samples recently and decided to put them all to the test, and let you know which ones I think are worth trying out or buying full-size.

Let’s get to it!

Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation Mattifying Oil-Free – Light Beige

This foundation is a terrible shade match for me (as you can see in the swatches), which is a shame because I absolutely love the texture of it. This feels like a true liquid-to-powder foundation that leaves a soft matte finish, and it sets almost immediately. I did put this on my face (dedication!) and it seemed like great coverage and didn’t cling to dry or uneven patches of skin, but of course it’s hard to tell when the shade was so off. Hopefully the swatch help show the coverage and finish of this–it seems beautiful!

Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation – Light 48

Again, this shade is too dark for me! But good news–this is the 4th out of 17 shades, so it covers a lot of different skin tones! Once again, I put this on my face despite the bad shade match so I could see what it looks like over redness and uneven areas. The package for this foundation says that it’s has 24-hour full coverage, and is a matte finish. I can’t comment on the longevity, but this foundation really seems like a true matte, although it does seem to reflect a little light for a more natural look. It takes a little longer to set than the Hourglass foundation, so I definitely felt it on the skin more. The coverage is great, but it seems to show let the bumps or unevenness on the skin show, rather than smooth out my complexion.

Elta MD Skincare UV Daily Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Moisturizing Facial Sunscreen

This is going to be quick. Regardless of–yet again–another bad shade match, there are a few reasons why I don’t understand this stuff. First, it came out not quite mixed, which you might be able to see in the photos. When I put it on my face, it sat on top of my skin and looked shiny. The only good thing to say is that it has very good coverage for a tinted moisturizer. It might be worth a try if you have very dry skin… but it might still make the driest skin look greasy.

Tarte BB Tinted Treatment Primer

Ok, so I didn’t realize until I was writing this that this is a primer (!??!?), but I essentially treated this like a foundation and wore it alone. This stuff is SUPER soft on the skin. It has a thick, creamy texture (especially for a BB cream) but blends easily. You only need a tiny bit to cover the face. That one pod from the photo lasted me at least a week! The coverage is similar to cream or whipped foundations but it’s not as heavy. It also didn’t get quite as shiny by the end of the day as a lot of other foundations.

Too Faced Born This Way Foundation – Vanilla

This little deluxe sample has a pump, which is already a great start. But past that, this foundation really seems to be worth the hype. It’s so light on the skin that I don’t even feel it! It has great, buildable coverage, but bumps or unevenness can show through. The foundation holds up all day, but I do get a little shine by the end of the day. This shade is a closer match for me (I even wore this one out into the world a few times), but it seems a bit yellow for it to be called “Vanilla.” It seems to look not as yellow on my skin, but I’m not sure if the yellow undertone is a trend among all of the shades, or if I just chose one that has it.

What would I try again or purchase?

  • Hourglass foundation: I would LOVE to try a sample of this in my shade. I don’t want to get addicted to something so expensive, but…
  • Tarte BB Primer: This stuff is awesome. I would totally think about buying this!
  • Kat Von D foundation: I’m not as enthusiastic about this one, but I would definitely want to play around with a sample in a better shade match for me.
  • Too Faced BTW: This foundation is great, and I’d love to try one with more of a pink base than yellow.

Have you tried any of these foundations? What do you think?
